The new Era for Artillery Ammunition: SMArt® 155

(Sensor fuzed Munition for the Artillery, caliber 155 mm)

-INTELLIGENT-EFFECTIVE-AFFORDABLE-

SMArt® 155 is an artillery round to defeat armored targets on very long ranges. The shell contains two submunitions to detect and destroy tank targets. Each submunition carries sensors,  electronics and a warhead. The sequence of function is completely autonomous.

SMArt® 155 represents the latest generation of modern artillery ammunition.

SMArt® 155 provides the artillery forces for the first time with the capability to effectively engage and destroy any kind of armored targets regardless whether they are moving or camouflaged with pin point accuracy in every weather and environment with minimum ammunition expenditure.

The round was developed by order of the German Procurement Agency (BWB). It meets all the relevant NATO standards. The full rate series production contract for fielding SMArt® 155 to the German Bundeswehr was awarded by GIWS in 1997.

SMArt® 155 the synonym for:

    • Reliability
    • All weather capability
    • Extreme scenario capability
    • Destruction fast moving targets
    • Resistance to countermeasures
    • Extended range
    • Cost effectiveness
    • NATO standards
    • Tested and Qualified

Gun: PzH 2000

SMArt® 155 in full scale series production!

Procurement is NO RISK!

Engagement:

SMArt® 155 can be fired from any 155 mm artillery gun. Range is up to 27.5 km when fired from PzH 2000.

Handling of the round, firing procedures, and ballistics are not different to conventional ammunition.

A single volley of SMArt® 155 projectiles from few guns is capable to successfully accomplish a firing mission. After shooting the firing unit may scoot immediately or execute the next fire order.

The well defined scan area of the SMArt® 155 submunitions makes it possible to fight the enemy in close combat and in delimited areas.

The SMArt® 155 sensor system can be used under all weather and environmental conditions. Due to multi-channel sensor technology it is immune against todays and future active and passive countermeasures.

Fighting SMArt® 155 will lead to minimum success because of the very short exposure time.

If there is no target within the submunitions footprint, reliable self destruction takes place.

Collateral damages in urban areas are drastically reduced as a result of both: the small number of rounds per engagement and the ammunition’s penetrator confining damages to the armored targets only.

The reduced amount of ammunition per mission provides additional significant benefits:

  • reduced number of weapons and operating personnel
  • reduced periphery (fuzes and propellant charges)
  • reduced barrel wear
  • reduced logistics (stock-keeping, re- supply)
  • fast relocation of own troops and, hence, drastically improved reaction time

This explains the excellent cost effectiveness of SMArt® 155, substantially adding to the combat value of the artillery.

Technical description

Its high degree of effectiveness is achieved by combining a multi-channel radar/radiometer/infrared sensor system with an explosively formed penetrator (EFP).

The multi-channel sensor system provides the pin point accuracy in all environments and under all weather conditions. It is capable to detect camouflaged and non-camouflaged targets as well. This results in a minimum of ammunition expenditure per mission.

The algorithm performance used for SMArt® 155 ensures high resolution of the scanned pattern resulting in excellent detection performance at very low false alarm rates, also in the presence of strongly camouflaged targets and countermeasures.

If there is no target within the submuni-tion’s footprint two independent and redundant self destruction mechanisms make sure that no duds remain on the battle field.

The advanced technology lethal mechanism is capable of defeating all modern armour, including sandwich and reactive armour.

The projectile and its submunitions are designed as modular hardware. This enables easy assembly, facilitates quality assurance and offers future adaptive product development and growth potential for product improvement.

Each SMArt® 155 round operates autonomously. There is no need for any target illumination.

After shooting the firing unit may scoot immediately or execute the next fire order.

Furthermore, shoot-and-scoot tactics and fast availability for new missions increase the combat value of the artillery assets.

The very short time needed to complete a firing mission enables the friendly forces to largely prevent hostile target acquisition, thereby increasing their own safety.

Due to multi-channel sensor technology, the SMArt® 155 submunitions are immune to countermeasures.

This explains the excellent cost effective-ness of SMArt® 155, substantially adding to the combat value of the artillery in the light of today’s defence policy and environment.
